Lesley’s 2 Successful Take-A-Chance Incidences

When it comes to parting with money I tend to err on the cautious side. Admittedly that’s the more diplomatic reason for what I’m going to talk about (although why I’m trying to be diplomatic with myself I don’t know). The real reason is that I’m a control freak and I don’t like to be involved in things which have not had their purpose or quality revealed to me.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried 2 things this week which I’d always thought of trying but never dared to.

The first is the movie Confidence. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to rent this because it was a heist movie and you can never be sure with heist movies. They’re always either really really good or completely awful. The script has to be tight, the directing has to bring out the best in the script and the entire movie has to emanate with style.

Also I actually remember watching bits of this show on a plane a while back and not being entirely impressed.

But I’m glad I rented it because, like I said before, I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn’t say that this is the heist movie. But one worthy of the genre. Typical of a heist movie, the movie shows you what seems to be happening then, at the end, reveals what actually happened. And the explanation was reasonably satisfying. Unfortunately, instead of making use of clever directing to trick the audience into thinking that what they’re watching is what actually happened, so that they get the satisfaction of revealing their terrifically brilliant twist at the end, this movie took the easy way out and simply had the first 3/4 of the film narrated by the protagonist at gun point. This had the unfortunate result of making it very obvious that what the protagonist was narrating wasn’t actually what happened. That is, it was very obvious that the protagonist was simply tricking the gun man and already had some preplanned scheme to get out of his seemingly trapped position.

While this might seem like the incompetence of the writer, I think it’s actually more of the director’s fault because, from watching the interviews, the writer didn’t think the movie would make it so big and probably wrote it for a less capable director and team of actors. But seeing as how it became a substantially sized Hollywood film, the onus would have been on the director to make the decision to change the script and tell the story in a way that would still retain some surprise.

Aside from this, the surprising star of the show is Edward Burns who plays the brains and main man. I think his presence alone satisfies the quintessential style quotient. While his face did look vaguely familiar from other movies he’s done, he’s never really stood out. That is, until this movie.

Watch this if you’re looking for an acceptable heist movie and you’ve watched all the more popular ones already.

The other thing I was pleasantly surprised by was an orange and hazelnut friand I had at Campos today!! Quite off on a tangent, I know. But think of it as a literary device, this way you get pleasantly surprised too! :D Channelling my feelings to the reader (also note sudden liberal use of exclamation marks and smiley faces!!). Clever clever.

Anyway, I’ve been wanting to try this since forever. But I’ve never been able to successfully justify buying the small, rather exorbitantly priced snack. Well, today the stars aligned. Because I had already decided to have lunch at home (read: free) and knew I would get hungry if I didn’t get something to eat before my 2 hour long lecture. But at the same time didn’t want to eat anything too big before lunch. Cue yummy looking friand placed enticingly on cake stand.

It was everything I didn’t dare hope it would be. Like a muffin, only softer, fluffier. The top was glazed and had a sprinkling of sliced almonds and a sugar-preserved orange piece. yum yum yum! And it was just the right size because I always find muffins way too big and hence way too guilt-inducing.

So thus ends Lesley’s 2 Successful Take-A-Chance Incidences.

But this definitely does not meant I’m going to be more adventurous in the future.
